Only His Mercy Suffices – 2016.07.26

He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me…
You, Lord, are my lamp;
the Lord turns my darkness into light.
2. Samuel 22, 20.29

King David wrote this song of praise for the Lord. He was a man of God, and God delighted in him. Since childhood, David prayed to the Lord. He played the most beautiful songs on his flute and could also play the harp. He had a beautiful voice. He grew big and strong. He had no fear; he rescued a lamb from a bear and fearlessly fought a lion. He was not afraid of Goliath… Yes, God delighted in David! That is why He brought him out of all difficult situations and made him king.
What about us? We are not perfect. There is really nothing I am truly good at. I seldom sing on tune. There are times I’d rather choose to retreat than be brave. And I cannot compose songs of praise. I cannot see any reason God should delight in me, as He delighted in David.
I think God is different. He is as different as we can imagine! He does not notice outward appearance, or even our inner being. He sees whether we seek Him and love Him. When all our own securities, our perfection, our own righteousness, our pride, in short, when our ego breaks down and is no longer of use to us, then He is there. Because that is when He can show His mercy. As long as I am happy and everything is good, I have no need for Him. That is why He destroys everything I build on, so that emptiness and darkness remains. Then I call to the Lord, because nothing and no one can save me from my forsakenness but the Lord! When all that remains is His grace, mercy, forgiveness and love, that is when He can get to work in my life. When I accept Him and believe in His grace, then He can start work in my heart. Only then can there be light. Only then can the joy of God overpower me, forgiveness be believed in and salvation be there!
He leads from darkness into light. He leads from the dead end into the wide open. With Him I am able to conquer all. He is wonderful! It is so much better to build on His grace than having to do it all ourselves! How can I become someone God can find delight in? Through mercy, and mercy alone!
Yes, Jesus, I let myself fall into Your hands. I have nothing that You would truly delight in. But Your mercy makes me just, Your mercy turns me into a child of God. Your mercy leads me to the light! You are a wonderful, merciful God. To You I want to belong!
