Existential fear – 2015.11.16

The Lord is my shepherd,
I lack nothing.
Psalm 23:1

Existential fear is something many people suffer from. Today they have enough but tomorrow it could be different. Today there is enough food, clothing and money. But what about tomorrow?
There is unrest within us. Do we still have work and income tomorrow? Are the retirements funds secure? Will the marriage hold together? What happens to the children? The car makes strange noises, will it break down for the last time?
All our life we can be chased by those fears and sorrows. Even if our workplace is the most secure one in the world… maybe it will change. The physician certifies us a good health but we think: maybe something was overlooked? Maybe a great sickness will strike us soon? It’s the middle of our vacation and we can’t relax because we don’t remember turning the stove off, or because we think about what happens when the fridge breaks, or who knows what could happen.
Those thoughts can make our life miserable. Jesus wants us to live an easy life, walk through our life with a spring in our steps! He wants to take our yoke and smash it.
Sometimes we let Him take our sorrows. After that we really feel free from all this pressure. But just after a short while our sickness starts again: maybe…
Better we do it properly this time: I sign over to need to take care for my life and my family to You, Jesus. I will do my best and trust in You to bless my and keep an eye on me! I don’t want to worry anymore. And I don’t want to be afraid anymore, never again! Please give me a nudge in the right direction, if I return to my old ways.
We can make it, but only with a lot of patience and strength of will. Jesus is a patient teacher, together with Him we will learn it. Jesus is the good shepherd who takes care for His sheep. He loves to give! But He can’t take care of us when we want to take care of us ourselves.

Thank You Jesus, for You know me perfectly! All my sorrows and my worries You know them and You still want to take care of me. Yes Lord, that’s the way it is supposed to be: I give my sorrows to You and You take care of me. Than I don’t have unnecessary burdens to carry. Finally, I can enjoy life unencumbered! You are true to Your word: the Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
