I will be his father and he shall be My son.

God wants to have a very close relationship with us, similar to that of a young son to his father. That is what he longs for, even though we really has no need to deal with us. God is a God of love, the actuality of love in a person.
We like to keep God at a distance. We like going to church, reading religious books and praying, however he is our counterpart. But we don‘t allow God to take hold of us completely – and God does not want to either. People hold each other at a polite distance. People do not come too close. People cannot live without others, without contact and relationships. But people prefer to be cautious and not totally open. If we come too close to someone, we become defensive. So like the hedgehog: they want to warm each other but if they come too near they will prickle.
We have the same caution before God and hold Him at a distance. In some areas we allow him to speak with us, in others we prefer our own opinion and fear Him a little.
God us to be His to be our counterpart, as a wise, loving, meek, patient and friendly father. He wants us to have an independent, mature identity and not to be misused as string puppets. He wants to take part in our lives, in all our small and big successes and sorrows. He wants to be more than a place of refuge for the emergency.
Fathers watch over the growing of their children, that they receive all good conditions that they need, they drive the children to sport and other such activities, in oder that they have good development, they set challenges as well as pamper them, they make the mind of the child to a mature personality. Small children understand this and take and take and take. They admire their father, that he can do everything and is so strong. They love him and trust him. When something breaks, the father is there. They tell him everything all the small worries and woes.
We need such a relationship with our God; fully trusting. We can speak with Him about all of our circumstances and have hope for His help. He wants to be our father and we will be his child.
Thank you father in heaven that you are not so far away. You hear my prayer and look out for me. You surround me with love and kindness, in the way that a good father does. How great that I am your child.
