Old and New — 2016.01.09

Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
Isaiah 43, 18f.

Sometimes people live in the past. They think of the happy hours that are past. They think of opportunities that were not used. They think of their mistakes and failures. They think of the people who are no longer there. Then sadness wants to overcome us.
Jesus exhorts us to see the past with gratitude. We should not be defeated by the sadness! Even in the past, he was the Lord who leads everything! It is our unbelief and our doubts as to the Lord of lords that makes us sad.
Jesus looks forward and wants us to so as well. For us, it is often painful to let go of the past, but necessary. Because how could he create something new with us, if we remain in yesterday?
That is why we wanted to hand over our lives to Him; – and as part of our life the past. Let us rejoice that he has forgiven all the guilt. We want to be grateful that he has even then held out his hand over us. We want to look at crises and hard hours as a school for us, in that He has proved as a saviour and has cut us like branches on the vine. He knows what was best for us then!
He begins again with us, and he begins new. This day is new, and he wants to create something new. He wants to be new with us, surrounded by his strong love, pouring mercy on us and giving new strength to our work. For him it is true: leave the old to rest and make no reproach. But start new with us and have new hopes for us.
Do we not realize the new?
Oh Jesus, fill us again with your Holy Spirit who makes the Word of God come alive! That we may know how you live and work in us, we want to align ourselves according to you! Create in me something new, something that pleases the Lord!
