He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. …
My sheep listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow me. …They shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
John 10, 3. 27f.

Many Christians cannot say exactly whether they can hear the voice of Jesus at all. This may be partly because they constantly listen to other things, but also because they may have preconceived ideas.
It is very rare that someone hears the voice of Jesus acoustically, as one hear another person. He speaks differently, quietly and in many ways.
Jesus clearly states here: they hear my voice. There is no if, maybe, possibly.
We hear Him talking in the Bible. Sometimes a verse speaks directly to us and gives us courage. We take this personally as God’s promise for us in our situation. And God sticks to it and does not disappoint us. If you search Bible passages according to your own ideas and want to persuade God to act the way you want Him to, things usually go wrong.
In silence a soft voice appears, somehow we get a experience certainty that God wants to do this or that. This certainty must be held fast, otherwise it will be quickly discussed away by our conflicting thoughts. The best thing is to write it down, with date and place!
Sometimes God’s voice reaches us through another person. His word suddenly becomes certainty, conviction is there, God speaks through this person.
Rarely have I heard God’s voice. Once I was driving through a forest, when a voice in my head said: Be careful, there could be a deer on the road! – I was so shocked that I forgot to step on the gas, and when I came around the bend, I was able to slow down in time before the stag. – Well, this is just a small thing, but it was His voice.
I don’t know why God sometimes talks like this, other times like that; – He will have His reasons. For me it is only important to have time and peace to listen to Him, to open myself to Him and to keep what is said in my heart. I don’t want to lose it.
Sometimes God speaks through dreams, visions and prophets. We should not set God any limits on how He is to speak! But we should always check these special avenues of God’s speech to see if it really is so, and not be too gullible.

Thank You, Jesus! You still talk to me today. You are not far away and silent! Thank You, You know my circumstances and You know a way out. I trust You!
