The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you…
Exodus 2,12.13
Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses… On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every first-born of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. (Exodus 12,7.12.13)
Israel was being held captive, bound and enslaved in Egypt. But the Lord heard their pleas and sent Moses to free them. In the night of their departure (=exodus), the Israelis were to slaughter and eat the passover lamb. They were to paint its blood on their door frames. God would see the blood and pass their houses. He would not punish the inhabitants of these houses.
Our hearts also have doors (compare Revelations 3,20). Jesus wants to occupy our hearts. He is standing at our door, knocking. He does not want us to fall prey to God’s judgment. That is why He became our Passover Lamb. He let Himself be slaughtered in our stead. And we take His blood to paint on the door frames of our hearts. Then the corrupter will have no access, but will have to pass us by. The angel of death, the corrupter, the destroyer, the liar, murderer and thief will have to remain outside!
Why does God differentiate between Israel and Egypt? Were the Israelis good, and the Egyptians bad? No, they were all sinners. Was it because the Israelis were His people? No, the Israelis whose door frames were not painted with the blood of the passover lamb were also stricken by the destructor. It was only faith that made the difference. Those who believed in God’s offer of salvation and did as God commanded, were saved. Those who did not believe, were judged.
And so it is with Jesus. If we believe that He is our Passover Lamb (see Isaiah 53,7), andput ourselves under the safety of His liberating blood, then we are saved, and the destructor moves past. Should we not accept it, the destructor has free access to our hearts.
Thank You, Jesus, for becoming my Passover Lamb. Now I stand under Your protection and the destructor will have to move past. Please, cleanse my heart from all putridity and keep it cleansed! You are my Redeemer, my Saviour, my Liberator and my Helper.
